The long-awaited extension of the AVE high-speed line will revolutionize travel in the south-east of Spain. Recently, the European Union announced a substantial boost of €411 million in funding, reaffirming its commitment to the project. This cash injection brings the total investment to an impressive EUR 3.5 billion, underscoring its strategic importance.
The extension will seamlessly connect Vera, Almeria, Murcia, Alicante and others, closing a notable gap in the region’s rail network. Currently, travelers and freight transport between Almería and other major cities are forced to take a detour via Madrid. However, with the completion of this project, such detours will become a thing of the past, streamlining connectivity and enabling smoother journeys.
Works are already in full swing along all parts of the Mediterranean Line, including the development of numerous viaducts, bridges and a 175 km dedicated track designed to allow speeds of up to 300 km/h. Vera will also have a state-of-the-art passenger train station, with extensive facilities including two platforms, cafes, various shops and ample parking for 200 vehicles.
In addition, there are plans for an extensive shopping center of 40,000 m2 adjacent to the station. This versatile complex will not only cater to the needs of travellers, but will also serve as a hub for the local community, with amenities such as an electric vehicle charging station, shops, car rental and secure parking facilities.
The completion of this project, which is expected to be operational in 2026, is in line with the European Union’s vision of sustainable development. According to European Commissioner for Cohesion and Reforms, Elisa Ferreira, the impact of this vital transport infrastructure will reach far beyond regional borders. It promises to increase convenience, safety and economic opportunities for both passengers and businesses, while also contributing to the EU’s overarching goal: a greener, more environmentally sustainable future.
As the AVE high-speed network continues to expand, this year exceeding 4,000 km in length across Spain, it is strengthening its position as the largest in Europe and the second largest in the world. Travel times from Vera via the new AVE will be drastically reduced: traveling to Murcia takes just 40 minutes, Valencia 2 hours, Madrid in 3 hours and Barcelona in 4 hours. This project marks an important milestone in the evolution of the Spanish transport landscape and promises unparalleled convenience and efficiency for generations to come!
